Working From Home Tanked My Productivity

svgFebruary 19, 2026LifestyleTravelAnish shakya

When I first started working from home, I thought I had unlocked a secret life hack.

No commute. No awkward elevator small talk. No office microwave that smells like three-day-old fish.

“This,” I told myself confidently, “is where productivity skyrockets.” It did not.

The Fantasy vs. The Reality

The Fantasy:

I would wake up early, sip coffee by the window, power through tasks, finish early, and maybe even take up yoga.

The Reality: I woke up at 8:58 for a 9:00 meeting.

In pajamas. Camera off. Mic muted. Spirit absent. he he he

Somewhere between “flexible schedule” and “I’ll do it later,” my productivity quietly packed its bags and left.

The Commute That Wasn’t

I used to complain about commuting. But apparently, that 30-minute drive was doing something important—it was preparing my brain to work.

Now my commute is:

Bed → Bathroom → Kitchen → Laptop.

Total travel time: 47 seconds.

My brain hasn’t even booted up yet, but I’m already expected to be professional.

The House Has Opinions

When you work in an office, the environment says: This is where we work.

When you work at home, the environment says:

  • “Maybe clean the kitchen first?”
  • “Have you considered reorganizing your closet?”
  • “What if you just… lie down for five minutes?”

Five minutes is a lie. Five minutes becomes a documentary.

The Productivity Illusion

At home, you feel busy all day.

You answer emails.

You attend meetings.

You move your mouse to stay active.

And somehow, at 5 p.m., you’ve accomplished… two and a half things.

In the office, I used to complete tasks.

At home, I complete snacks.

The Couch Is Not a Chair

Let’s talk about the couch.

The couch is soft.

The couch is supportive.

The couch whispers, “You deserve comfort.”

The couch does not whisper, “Finish that report.”

The couch is not a coworker. The couch is a lifestyle choice—and not a productive one.

The Disappearing Boundaries

When I worked at the office, work stayed there.

Now work is everywhere.

I answer emails in the kitchen.

I think about deadlines while brushing my teeth.

I see my laptop and feel mild anxiety.

It turns out that when your office is your home, your brain never fully clocks out.

The Turning Point

Eventually, I realized something:

Working from home didn’t destroy my productivity.

It removed all the structure I was secretly depending on.

So I made changes:

  • I set real working hours.
  • I stopped working from the couch (tragic, but necessary).
  • I got dressed like a functioning adult.
  • I made a daily task list I actually follow.

And slowly… productivity returned.

Not dramatically. Not magically.

But steadily.

Final Thoughts

Working from home is amazing.

It’s flexible. It’s comfortable. It’s convenient.

But without structure, it becomes:

Comfortable chaos.

I didn’t need a new job.

I didn’t need a new laptop.

I just needed boundaries—and slightly less couch time
